The day before my flight and my visa has finally arrived. Thank goodness! It seems that no matter how well-prepared you are, there is always something last-minute to worry about.

This last week and a half has been really good, though. Meeting other people at the SIM orientation held last week has been so encouraging: people who are going out to different parts of the world (though most to Africa) and for different lengths of time.

The week before was a bit hectic, so focusing and spending time on my trip, why I was going and how I can be a support and encouragement to others was really beneficial. Not to mention the team-building exercises involving eggs, blind-folds, balloons and water (I’ll leave this to your imagination), the endless cups of tea and homemade cakes…..we were thoroughly spoilt, and well looked after during our time there.

I’d like to say a big thank you to the SIM team too for their input during orientation and for the depth and diversity of topics covered. I did get a bit scared during the session about what to do in emergencies (situations of political unrest, etc.), but it’s all necessary stuff, I know!

So here I am with far too many clothes to pack, too many books (but I think I will read them!) and probably all sorts of things that I might need but probably will not ever use. I’m waiting for my brother David, the Africa expert, and Mum to tell me what I don’t need to even think about packing, because I know they will!

My Mum arrived last night with some weighing scales – not for me but for my backpack allowance! Talk about organization…

Off to sort out some more stuff now: photocopy documents, buy insect repellent and the all important rechargeable batteries. I fly in to Addis Ababa at 1am Friday morning, so I'll hopefully be able to provide an update early next week.

Bye for now!

Lucy
