El Alfarero – Vision
Isaiah 42: 5-7
Our calling is to:
- show righteousness
- allow God to always lead and guide
- be a light in the darkness
- open eyes that are blind
- free / release captives
God has called us to be his instruments to reach out to the university population. He is 'the potter'. He is the only one who can transform and mould lives. But he is calling us to be his instruments now.
1. Discipleship
Rooting and building up (Col. 2: 6,7)
The importance of feeding themselves – spiritual disciplines, constant growth, firm roots
Reproducing
That each Christian learns to reproduce spiritual children, modelling and mentoring
Modelling discipleship
As students are discipled, they will in turn use the materials and ideas to disciple others within their churches and faculties.
Spotting potential
We spot potential leaders and invest in their lives, to develop leaders for the future of the project and also future leaders for churches and other ministries.
2. Counselling
-Isaiah 42: 5-7
-Jesus is the power to change, not us
-We are dependent on God in prayer
-Personal growth as counsellors and as a counselling team
If we are to effectively counsel, we have to also be continually growing and allowing God to work at transforming and moulding our lives – prayer partnerships and mentoring relationships are key in making this a constant reality and having the help and accountability that we need.
Training counsellors
This is key for the future of the ministry and also to support and equip local churches to be more effective in their pastoral ministry.
This will be achieved by an intensive course in biblical counselling offered to those who have been recommended by their pastors, and by our 'Monday Night - Counselling Night' focus, including seminars and debates related to biblical counselling to be publicized in churches across the city.
Development of resources
Particularly developing the library and other resources, such as course material and display posters.
3. Pregnancy Crisis Centre
-This is one of the greatest needs among the university population
-As the abortion capital of South America, Sucre is in desperate need of a centre where girls can go for help in these moments of crisis.
-Now is God’s time
Across Bolivia God is raising up Christians and for the first time ever centres are being established in all the major cities.
-Offering an integrated service
We need to offer a complete service so that any girl who chooses to keep her baby receives the necessary support, including controls, check-ups, antenatal classes, experience with babies, counselling and preparation, provision of clothes and equipment etc.
When the baby is born, we need to offer continuing help, including a support network and a nursery where her baby can be cared for when she is in classes.
Working with local doctors and nurses, we can work to provide this complete service. For those that abort and are suffering post-abortion syndrome, we need to offer support and counselling. Our aim is to demonstrate the love of God for them.
-This ministry needs to be soaked in prayer – the power to change lives
A prayer network to pray for the girls and the babies, and that this crisis in their lives would lead to the life-changing experience of a relationship with Christ.
4. Courses
-Equipping churches
The courses will be part of the leadership development, not just within the project, but also in local evangelical churches of all denominations.
-Meeting students at their point of need
The larger Saturday courses will aim specifically at providing students with teaching on issues they are facing, helping them to understand themselves and make wise decisions in their lives.
-Counselling training
‘Monday Night - Counselling Night’ is part of the vision to equip local churches to be able to offer biblical counselling to those in need. On Monday nights the focus of the seminars and debates will also be an aspect of biblical counselling.
5. Evangelism
-Becoming known
That El Alfarero would become known as a place where students with spiritual hunger and questions, but who fear entering an Evangelical church, can come to find answers to their questions.
-Training
The staff and volunteers are trained in evangelism and are looking for opportunities to chat with volunteers and customers and bring them into a relationship with Christ.
-Events
Frequent events with an evangelistic focus – concerts, videos, presentations, dramas, seminars etc – especially when we have the new conference facility.
-Conversions
That every week, on average, one person comes to know Christ and has their life moulded and transformed through the ministry.
6. Volunteers
-Team
That we would establish a team of at least 50 faithful volunteers, with at least half being Christians.
-Motivation
That we would find ways to constantly show appreciation for the team, and ways to motivate them to continue, as well as showing them love and care.
-Co-ordinators
That a reliable team of Christian co-ordinators would be established and trained and discipled to manage the volunteer team each night, alongside the administrator.
-Fruit
That within the lives of individual volunteers there would would be much spiritual fruit, as God changes their lives through the evangelism, discipleship and counselling that they experience in El Alfarero.
7. Church relations
-Becoming known
That El Alfarero would be known by all the evangelical churches in Sucre, and that they regard El Alfarero as a support and not a threat.
-Positive influence
That the staff, Directors and Committee are constantly looking for ways to positively publicize the project in their churches.
-Relationships
That the Directors seek to develop close personal relationships with the pastors of key churches.
-Equipping
That we can be seen as a help and support by the local churches, particularly in the area of equipping them to be able to offer biblical counselling within their churches.
-Fruit
That the local evangelical churches would see positive fruit from the ministry of El Alfarero in terms of new converts in their churches and more mature Christians in their youth groups.
