The Asian countries SIM in which SIM works are home to 45% of the world’s population. Major religions include Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. These religions are strongly held -- and all are suspicious of Christianity.
Spiritual oppression in many parts of Asia is very real. 'Religion' is very obvious as there are shrines, temples, and gods everywhere. The Church is small and struggling in many places, and needs tremendous support as it copes with persecution and poverty.
Evangelism and church planting often move slowly – perseverance and dedication are required. SIM workers are training new leaders and preparing them to share the gospel with the communities around them.
Vast concentrations of totally unreached people live across Asia, and those numbers are increasing. There is a vast amount of poverty among people, struggling to make their way among the millions of others seeking to survive.
The cities of Asia are growing dramatically, while those in rural areas are struggling to make a living off the land. In both cities and rural areas this leads to issues of a sense of hopelessness and desperation.
There is also a significant increase in the number of people impacted by HIV/AIDS. SIM is therefore committed to helping people improve their living situation through many development projects, along with planting and strengthening the Church.
