The earthquake that struck the Sichuan province of China on 12 May, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, has left thousands dead and even more injured, homeless and traumatized.
SIM and our partners in China are responding to show Christ's compassion to the Chinese people in the face of such staggering disaster. Joining with other small-scale relief efforts led by local and foreign non-profit agencies, we are helping to provide immediate needs such as water, blankets and tents.
Rebuilding and restoration
As work shifts from searching for survivors to burying the dead and caring for those left behind, a grim reality faces the people of Sichuan. Earthquake damage is estimated at £10 billion. Infrastructures--including schools, homes, roads, bridges and hospitals--will have to be rebuilt. And the great personal trauma experienced must be grieved and processed.
Along with our partners, we are making plans to assist in rebuilding and restoration efforts, managed by small teams in partnership with local Christians. Additionally, people are preparing to train Chinese brothers and sisters in trauma counselling.
Pray for
• aid to reach those in greatest need
• wisdom for China's government as it grapples with the disaster
• the suffering to be comforted
• Christians to share God's love in both tangible and spiritual ways
