The Gift of a Goat in Zimbabwe

Clara’s mother died when she just was 3 weeks old. She and her 3 year old brother are now looked after by their grandmother who couldn’t afford to buy milk formula and therefore struggled to feed Clara. The volunteers at Hope for AIDS heard of her plight and encouraged Clara’s grandmother to feed her with goats’ milk. In some places it is culturally unacceptable to feed humans with goats’ milk, but the volunteers met with the local chief and church leaders and explained to them that goats’ milk is better for babies than formula or cows’ milk. They showed them photographs of other children who had received it, and the leaders agreed that it could be used. Clara’s grandmother took courage and started giving her goats’ milk. As soon as Clara started feeding on it, she gained weight. The community is now feeding other babies with goats’ milk, thanks to the bravery of Clara’s grandmother. This courageous introduction of goats’ milk has saved the lives of many children.
