More than 1,200 people are dead and another 1,000 missing on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao after Typhoon Washi hit land on 16th & 17th December. More than 12 hours of continual rain caused rivers to burst their banks, leading to flash floods and mudslides. Thousands are injured and an estimated 60,000 survivors are left homeless, escaping with only the clothes they were wearing. Our SIM team in the Philippines is mobilising a response to the crises.
SIM flood relief will focus on victims in Cagayan de Oro—the worst hit city. The assistance of food, water, medicine, clothes, blankets, and basic home utensils will benefit many believers as well as others in the community including the Muslim ethnic groups. Many have lost their loved ones, their homes and everything they once possessed. Through acts of kindness given in love victims will see the love of Christ poured out in a practical way.
The provision of rapid relief will continue until the emergency situation becomes stable, and communities, governmental bodies and agencies establish long-term assistance.
