Making drinking water safe

Ghana wellWhen a new well was dedicated in Kalijiisa, Ghana, the village women literally danced for joy.

Previously, they’d had to walk several miles in the dry season to get drinking water,’ explained SIMer Pam Moon. ‘Often new brides would leave their husbands when they discovered how far they had to walk for water.’

‘Now our wives will no longer leave us!’ Kalijiisa men exclaimed, as the well was dedicated.

The new well is important, and not just because of its positive impact on marriage, according to Pam’s husband, Jay. ‘In the Builsa area, waterborne diseases are often attributed to spiritual causes, resulting in suspicion, hatred, accusations of witchcraft and sometimes death.

‘In a very tangible way, clean water is another part of the discipling process, whereby a Builsa man or woman can see how God can provide for their needs.’
