SIM/MECO merger will strengthen Middle East gospel outreach

Serving In Mission (SIM-UK) and Middle East Christian Outreach (MECO) UK & Ireland completed the merger of their two organisations on Friday, September 30.

The two long-established mission agencies are pooling resources, prayer and personnel to drive greater gospel outreach both in the Middle East and among diaspora Middle Eastern peoples.

In a joint statement, SIM-UK director Steve Smith (above right) and MECO director Mike Parker (above left) said: “We believe that bringing our two organisations together will allow us to achieve far more for the gospel in the Middle East than either of us can alone.

“Our prayer is that our merger will see more people mobilised and equipped to serve Christ in the Middle East and that more people from those countries will become disciples of the Lord Jesus.

“We know many Christians in the UK and Ireland will be encouraged to hear that we are coming alongside churches to reach out with the gospel to the Middle East.

“This is especially timely because of the large numbers of Middle East migrants arriving in Europe. Many churches are asking for help to welcome and share Christ’s love with these people.”

MECO has been working in the Middle East for more than 150 years and has been attracted by SIM’s global capacity to mobilise mission workers and support them in their ministries.

SIM has been taking the gospel to people who have never heard it for more than 120 years and now works in more than 70 countries worldwide.  In addition to the UK and Ireland office, SIM has sending and receiving offices across the globe and views Middle East peoples as a key new focus.

MECO’s current mission workers sent from the UK and Ireland have been invited to transfer to SIM-UK. A new Middle East regional office is already operating within SIM, with Mike Parker moving across to direct this venture.

As our organisations aim to provide continuity of service to all those they serve, MECO staff will assist with the transition over the next six months.
